May Day National Day of Action

Come join us for May Day celebrations in Ithaca!

Next Thursday, the first day of May, is May Day, also known as International Workers Day. People around the world will be celebrating and supporting the labor movement.

In Ithaca, a new local grassroots action group, Indivisible Tompkins, is gathering supporters on the Ithaca Commons. We will be joined by members and supporters of the Working Families Party, Tompkins County Progressives, and Third Act. Other organizations are being invited to join us as well. Together we will march from the Bernie Milton Pavilion to DeWitt Park, where we will join a celebration that is being organized by various local workers-rights groups and leaders.

For the most up-to-date information, we would like to refer you to our website: indivisibletompkins.org.

Our event will start promptly at 4:45 pm at the Bernie Milton Pavilion (come earlier, with your signs, if you would like to wave at traffic on Seneca Street). The Indivisible Art Team will give a performance that you won’t want to miss (think: costumes and poetry and music). Then members of the Resisters Chorus (with well-known soloists) will lift our hearts and spirits as we begin our procession to DeWitt Park to join the celebration there.

The DeWitt Park May Day Celebration will include speakers and music. We will learn about the history of May Day, the Protect the Right to Organize Act, the Public Power Campaign, Just Cause legislation and other programs and issues important to workers. We will be invited to sing along to classic folk tunes from the US labor movement. Local groups will be tabling and there will be opportunities to get information on worker causes and an important handout on Your Rights in the Workplace.

A celebration would not be complete without food, of course. You can also expect a raffle and other activities — fun and educational for the whole family.

We hope to see you there!
